The 17th European Senior Chess Championship begins in Sabadell

From August 12th to 20th, the Valles city brings together players over 50 years old on the one hand and players over 65 years old on the other hand to participate in the European Chess Championship. Also, players over 50 years old are participating in the European +50 Women’s Championship.

The first seed of the +50 European is Georgian Gran Master (GM) Zurab Sturua, rated 2548. Second rated is an old friend of Catalonia, the GM from the Sant Andreu club Karen Movsziszian, who recently won the “La Pobla de Lillet” international tournament. The third seed is French GM Eric Prie, who has played many times in the Catalonian League with the Andorra team. The best local Catalonian players are FIDE Master Alexandre Pablo and International Master Joan Pomes, both players of the Terrassa Chess Club

In the +65 category, the number one seed is Georgian GM Tamaz Giorgadze, who turns 77 this year. Second seed is Russian GM Evgeni Vasiukov, 84, while Swedish-born Master Nils-Gustaf Renman, rated 2353, completes the three leaders.

Twelve players participate in the +50 Women’s European Championship, nine of whom are Russian. However, the first seed is Dutch Grandmaster Elvira Berend. Also, WGM’s Galina Strutinskaia and Marina Aseeva, both originally of Russian, are also pre-tournament favorites. It’s worth mentioning that Maia Txiburdanidze, Women’s World Champion thirteen times running, has visited the championship.
