The GM from the Sant Andreu Club, Karen Movsziszian, won the +50 group European Senior Championship, scoring 7/9 points with no defeats. The Armenian led the field after seven rounds with six points and cruised to victory with two draws. Russian players Evgenij Kalegin (IM) and GM Gennady Tunik (GM), finished tied second with 6.5/9.
The Catalonian FIDE Master Alexandre Pablo had a great performance in this group, finishing fourth with 6/9, with just one defeat against the number one seed, Georgian GM Zurab Sturua.
In the +65 group, the winner was Swedish IM Nils-Gustaf Renman, third seed at the start of the tournament. The IM led the event from beginning to end, even after losing to Georgian GM Tamaz Giorgadze, who eventually finished in second place after a last round draw. The podium was completed with Russian GM Evgeni Vasiukov on 6.5/9.
In this group the Catalonian player from the Aragones club, Josep Pérez Fernández, finished 15th with 5.5/9 after starting seed 34. Terrassa’s own FM Emili Simon had a really tough event facing very good players. He finished off with five rounds with no wins although he was able to draw with the former female World Champion Nona Gaprindashvili and Belgium MI Jan Rooze.
Finally, in the +50 female group the winner was the Russian GM Galina Strutinskaia with 7/9. Luxemburg WGM Elvira Berend, finished second while another Russian player, Marina Aseeva, finished third. There has been no Catalonian representation in this group.
The historical European Chess event has ended in Sabadell after nine rounds of chess with practically no incidents and a high level of satisfaction between the players. The capital of the Vallès Occidental region has been a great host to the event and Catalonia has enjoyed a very nice chess tournament.
